Do you Qualify for VA Cremation Benefits?
Military benefits for a veteran’s cremation include (eligibility dependent):
- flag
- arrangement of honors
- military service medallion
- reimbursement of cremation expenses
Video Transcript:
Pre-need cremation services will often offer additional benefits for veteran cremation including a flag case, arrangement of honors, a military service medallion, and much more. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs also offers monetary recognition and service benefits to those who have served in the armed forces. This can include reimbursement for cremation service expenses when applied to retired veterans, disabled veterans due to a service-related injury, as well as veterans who may pass in a VA hospital or nursing home. This is one of the great aspects of preplanning. In many cases, family members won’t know to ask these questions or might not know the right information to ask the VA. By helping you prearrange, Neptune Society can guide you through all the government rules, regulations, and savings, ensuring you won’t miss a thing.

Will Government Benefits Cover the Cost of Cremation?
Neptune Society helps families navigate government paperwork and determine available military and social security benefits for cremation costs. Plan ahead to determine eligibility.
Video Transcript:
Sifting through government rules, regulations, and benefits can be a daunting task which is another great reason to preplan with a company like Neptune Society.
Government benefits can be limited. For example, Social Security might award benefits to survivors of deceased workers who fall within strict guidelines. Military veterans may be eligible for benefits that include flags, grave markers, or a plot in a National Cemetery. However, VA cremation benefits depend on the amount of time spent in active duty and the type of separation or discharge.
Social Security and VA cremation benefits are not automatic. Someone must research the necessary steps as well as complete and submit any required forms.

How Can You Take Charge of Funeral Planning?
Relying on a will that may be read following final arrangements is risky. A pre-planned, or pre-need, cremation allows you to make you own arrangements in advance.
Video Transcript:
Prepaid cremation services allow a person to plan their own final arrangements way before they are needed.
Often, a will is not read until the deceased’s arrangements have already taken place. For this reason, relying solely on a will to express your final wishes can be risky. By making advance cremation arrangements, also known as pre-need cremation, all plans are prearranged and paid for before a death occurs.
When planning your cremation service in advance, you get to decide where you would like your service to take place, who you would like your guests to be, what personal touches you would like included, and whether you would prefer flowers or memorial gifts to be given to a charitable cause, organization, or family member in your honor. One of the greatest parts about preplanning is that you remove your family’s burden of planning a funeral when they can spending time with each other and celebrating your life.

How Can I Reduce the Cost of Cremation?
To ensure a solid investment in a prepaid cremation plan, choose a cremation provider who:
- is established
- has a good business model
- is licensed
- is reputable.
Video Transcript:
This is perhaps one of the most important questions you can ask. You should view preplanned arrangements as an investment for your future. Like many goods and services, the price of cremation will steadily rise over time. And since it will most likely be many years until you actually need the services, preplanning now saves you money.
You also want to make sure the company you are working with has been around for a while and has a good business model, one that will last well into the future. When you are dealing with a reputable, licensed, and professional cremation services provider, you should feel assured that whatever you invest in your prepaid cremation services plan will be there when the time comes and their services are needed.

How do I Pay for My Cremation in Advance?
You may choose to:
- pay for cremation in full, maximizing cremation cost savings
- pay for cremation over time: installment payments allow you to budget for cremation
- add travel or relocation coverage as additional insurance.
Video Transcript:
The first thing is that you want to look at the big picture. Know your current financial state and what it will be like for the next few years so that you can select a plan that you will feel comfortable with. You should also know whether you will pay in full or over time. Paying upfront often costs less in the long run. However, most cremation service providers offer installment plans if that is what better suits your finances.
Finally, you may need to consider a plan that covers additional travel or relocation. If you intend to travel or move, it is best to make sure you and your loved ones are protected. Investing in the additional coverage will make sure your pre-need cremation arrangements include transportation of the deceased from the place of death to an authorized holding or cremation facility.
No matter how you choose to pay for your arrangements, you can trust that your services are already taken care of. You’re receiving a good price, and the financial burden will not fall on your family members.

What Happens to My Cremation Plan if I Move?
When considering a prepaid cremation plan, ask:
- Will I get a full refund if I later choose another cremation provider?
- Is there any place in the United States my prepaid plan does not cover?
Video Transcript:
Years, even decades may pass between prearrangements and the actual need for services, so we cannot always be sure where we’ll be living or who (or what) to deal with when the time comes. That’s why we strongly advise people to select a prepaid plan that is portable and transferable to any agreeable service provider should you elect to change plans at a later date.
Before deciding on a service provider, be sure to pose these two questions, and be sure they answer them clearly for you. Ask “If I decide later to have another service provider carry out my plans, will I be entitled to a full refund?” and “Is there any place in the United States where my plans will not be fully honored?”

What Signatures are Needed for a Cremation?
A death certificate and cremation permit must be signed prior to cremation. Any delays may be out of our control, but Neptune Society walks you through every step, helping and guiding you through the process.
Video Transcript:
Your cremation service provider is required by law to complete a death certificate with the necessary information, provided by the family. Permits for cremation services cannot be obtained until the medical authorities provide the signatures.
Keep in mind there is the chance that autopsies and medical records may delay signatures by physicians, medical examiners, and the VA hospital, and sometimes we encounter circumstances beyond our control. This happens when local, state, or federal agencies; police; a county coroner; or medical examiners become involved and investigate the circumstances surrounding a death. In any case, with prearrangements you can rest assured that your provider will be there by you or your family’s side walking them through every step of the process.
